Ignitor boxes

Postby my79650 » Sat Mar 24, 2012 4:32 am

Just did some checking the other day from my local shop as i had to swap out one on the way home from work. A few sites that he deals with listed it as discontinued; one site he deals with lists as $137 each.

The black stuff melting out does not necessarily mean it is defective or soon will be.
If it still works, just refill, e.g. with JBweld.

The bike just started missing; running on 2 cylinders; had a spare in the saddlebag; plugged it in and ran smooth; so one of these on the machine just died after 33 years; no more spares; i used both off of my original 650; this was why i was asking. I got an ad up online Kijiji locally; got an email this morning from a guy from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan Canada....he wants $100. Got a bike scrap yard 90 miles away to check next weekend. If no luck by then i make a trip.

If you can't find any decent-priced ignitors, check out the GM DIS/HEI conversion. Link in my sig.

If you have a choice also go with a 79 (Z) model. The placement is diff and the pigtail is longer I believe.
Did you clean the tank out?!?!?!?!

You might want to look into these.

Aftermarket Modules on ebay
ELECTROSPORT IGNITER SET HONDA CB650Z
http://www.ebay.com/itm/ELECTROSPORT-IGNITER-SET-HONDA-CB650Z-A-chain-drive-79-81-CB650SC-Nighthaw-/120863600317?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item1c24082ebd&vxp=mtr

Used Modules on ebay
Honda CB650 CB 650 #2132 Igniters / Ignition Control Modules
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Honda-CB650-CB-650-2132-Igniters-Ignition-Control-Modules-Igniter-/360442032686?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item53ec04f22e&vxp=mtr

I would be interested in taking those dead modules off your hands. I could use the wiring, and connectors for the HEI ignition mod.

I have been reading thru you writeup Pinhead...does that eliminate those 30yr old school tech? Got a used bike dealer/scrapyard 90 miles away from me; he's old school and may have a few sets there for me to try. Just need a day off work to make the trip. Btw; i only got to pg 12; still a ways to go on your writeup Pinhead.

Has anyone ever took apart an ignitor box just to see what parts are in there? Perhaps a new diode or other component can be soldered back into it? I'm just throwing ideas out there.....

Page 17-2 in the manual linked below provides a schematic overview what is inside those "spark units", however without specific component data.

My salvage dealer had only 1 on hand when i got there today; said it came off of a Kawasaki. It's numbers on the face are:MC-9194, NEC at the bottom; must be a brand name; scored it for $40;, gutter-curb warranty; you get it the curb, no warranty. It works since i tried it before i logged in here.
