My 2008 Bike Trip to Mt. Washington

Postby Chris » Mon Sep 29, 2008 11:26 pm

PART 1 Ok, so I mentioned that my Dad and I were going to ride the bikes up to Mt. Washington in New Hampshire, right? Well, here's how it went. We left our homes in the south central Finger Lakes region of New York on Wednesday morning, Sept. 10 and headed north on Rt.13 out of Ithaca toward Chittenango. There, we got on Rt.5 east to Utica, NY. In Utica, we found Rt.8 and followed that up through the Adirondack Mountains to Ticonderoga. In Ticonderoga we got on Rt.9N and went north to Crown Point, NY near the southern end of Lake Champlain. Halfway between Crown Point and Port Henry there's a road called Bridge Rd. that goes east to [you guessed it] a bridge over Lake Champlain into Vermont. We camped at a campground on the NY side of the lake. The total miles for Wednesday were about 300. It was a nice, easy ride with beautiful weather and no interstate roads which means we passed through many small towns with 30mph zones and never went over 55mph. It was mostly rural farmlands between towns and finally forest when we got to the Adirondacks. I didn't get to take any pics until we stopped for the night.

We ate dinner at a little diner just on the other side of the bridge. The link for the Crown Point campground is http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/24461.html

TO BE CONTINUED...

Another follower of the proven Mt. Honda luggage system!
I guess after 300mls on small roads you did sleep quite well. I understand that you did not have time to take many pics during your trip.

Yes, I slept VERY well. In fact, I never woke up once throughout the night which is highly unusual for me. The luggage looks like a lot, but it really wasn't. Just a little more than I needed. :) What you see there is a sleeping bag, tent, rain gear, 2 chairs, and a backpack with enough clothes in it to deal with 4 days of whatever weather we might run into along the way and a few other odds and ends. My saddlebags held the usual... tools, spares, first aid kit, cable lock, rags, plastic bags, bungees, etc. I did remember to set the spring preload on the top notches. :D

Well, you easily hurt yourself fixing things on the road with inadequate tools.
I also have always one with me, I found it quite helpful to avoid loosing too much blood on my way home after my crash last year. BTW, it is not just for yourself.

Arcangel, the sleeping bag provided excellent back support.

5.4L, like Volker said, the first aid kit is not only for yourself.

If you are tired enough and the luggage behind you is high enough without sharp edges, you also can sleep on the bike on the main stand ...
