Thanks everyone! I'm stateside in NYC right now finishing up my master's degree but will be back in Germany for a month this Summer, then indefinitely starting the next.

I miss my bike! She's in Germany.

Be well all,

If anyone can help me identify the exact year and model of this bike I'd appreciate it.

Because I'm stateside right now, I won't have hands or eyes on the bike until late July. Once I see it I'll check for dates.

However, as I recall, there seems to be confusing information as to what year this is. I think I remember something like 1983/1984/1985 being on the VIN plate...however the engine I think matches up with a different year. I remember hearing RC03...

The bike was sold to original owner by a sale shop in Cologne.

I'm just not sure! I still don't understand what a "Euro" Z is yet. Or for that matter, a "Z."

I know it has a German Spec gear ratio: I tried to register in France and in order to do so they actually required me to "up-power" the bike. Funny. So I didn't do it.

I'll need the following come this summer, if anyone can supply. I put some miles into it a year back and it needs some TLC to get it looking like it does in that pick right now:

new seat or seat cover (x1)
new steering lock + cylinder (x1)
new tachometer (x1)
new tires (front and rear) recommendations?
set of carb overflow rubber drain tubes (x4)

Also, suggestions for fixing dents in tank. Anyone know of a good service guy near Cologne/Hamburg or anywhere in between?

Best,

Kaiser

If you look at the pics of the US bikes they are way diff than your except the 79. It is a Z model and same body but diff wheels and tail. The other US models are only like the "euro Z" in engine only. I would guess yours is a 81 - 84. The carbs changed in US in 81 but not sure when every where else did. Last common year of the sohc4 650 is 82 but some places did get them till 84. You have the newer CV carbs. Volkers has the older PD carbs.

From the decals I would assume one of the latest SOHC. As the CB650 did not sell really good in Germany, new bikes still were available and sold after their original model years. As German VIN plates do not have a year on them, your bike might be imported from elsewhere. Possible, as probably no more official German import models did exist at this time any more. I am even not sure if any official German import model did come with these decals at all.

KaiserKlayton wrote:..however the engine I think matches up with a different year. I remember hearing RC03...
In fact there is no need to assume a later engine. RC03 is 1981 model year and it would look exactly like yours. The 1982 RC08 engine is black and has in fact a different gear ratio.

However there is no German gear spec ratio but a "German cam". It means 50hp instead of 63hp. 50hp does not exist in France, so I guess this was the origin of your "up-power" issue.

Note that except engine, RC03 and RC05 do not share many parts although lots look similar at a first glance.

Volker,

Thanks for all of the great information. The puzzle is starting to unfold. The engine is indeed an RC03, and I remember determining that the "age" of the engine didn't quite match up with the year I was told for the rest of the bike.

The man I bought it from in Koeln told me it was some sort of "special order" at the dealership. Maybe he's referring to the fact that he bought a model no longer available in Germany, imported from elsewhere....

What other active members on this forum have Euro Z's like mine? I'd love to chat with them.

And yes...not the gear ratio, the cam. That makes sense--my story of course didn't. I was considering changing it myself to register in France when I was expected to reside there...but not anymore.

I rebuilt a 360 engine with a friend last Summer, don't really feel like dissecting my bike to that capacity anyway. One time is enough for this year.

Best,

Clayton

If your documents (Kraftfahrzeugbrief) have something like "Allgemeine Betriebserlaubnis A969" written/stamped in on the third page, it is an official German import bike. Otherwise there is some stamp related to the import instead.

The 63hp cam is a nice to have. Not something that just allows for higher rpm but feelable more torque also at the lower range. You may find the complete story here.

I remember some Z-model guys here from Britain, Scandinavia, Australia and South Africa. But most here seem to have the US models or the Custom. And -if you get ahead with the language- allmost all the French guys have Z-models. Très sympa.

cb650,

here's a pic of the 360. It's in Virginia, not NY. It's a friend of mine's. I did a basic internal pass on it, didn't spend too much time on it. Sort of a clunker. Had a seized piston (he kept it outside for a while during winter and rain got in through the exhaust), so I un-seized and so on and so forth. Still some electrical to be done but I had to leave town at that point...not sure of its current status.
