CB650C Project from P. I. Needs help of a brethren..
Re: CB650C Project from P. I. Needs help of a brethren..
Hey Bob! Glad to hear from you again.
The carb rack was the heaviest so far and I was charged by the forwarder 70usd and weighs 10lbs it says in the receipt. Not included is the shipping from the seller up to my alternate address in NYC 11377. I paid the shipping company upon arrival and no custom tax.
Will you help me scout for parts I need for this build Bob?

Yes I will scout parts here, that is what I was thinking about.

Bob! I truly appreciate your generous offer. Lets keep the back channel open. Lets keep the technical stuff in here for everyone to see that might help them in the future.
Is it really suggested that I tear apart the case and inspect everything? What are the odds of damages because of the intermittent oil light and those bits of pieces I found at the bottom? I was thinking that I should replace all the cam tensioner and guide assembly for the meantime and see if that fixes everything. You have been through a lot and would take every advise really seriously if that will help me get more the life of her.
I will gladly do that in no time just to get her mobile again. I want to ride her every weekend and some other work days. Nothing compares to riding the bike instead of a cage.
I will post more photos of this project soon.

ok so you have trash in it everywhere and need to flush it out just like a Carb with all the tiny channels. If you leave any trash in there it jump up and bite you when you least expect it.
The oil channels are full of the crud as is the crank and cam oil channels.
The tiny oil channels to the cam are in need of flushing out.
You may be able to leave the bottom case together and remove everything else to clean it all out but what about the oil passageways in the crank?
Look at a schematic diagram of the oiling circuit if you can find one.
Yes it did sound decent but need to keep it that way.
I have pulled two down similar in the last three years one not all the way and it later failed.
So I would take the effort to clean it out completely, and eyeball it while in there.

ok great.
Any thing left will potentially plug those oil orifices to the top end just like junk in the fuel system plugging jets and passages.
Also uncertain that each passageway is clean until you SEE IT for yourself.
Good luck sir. keep posted. Bob

No! That is for the 83-85 Nighthawk, and will not work in your engine. What you need will be 79-82 only.
14611-426-010 GUIDE, CAM CHAIN (NLA) Aftermarket part if lucky.
14500-426-010 TENSIONER, CAM CHAIN (Available: Partzilla) For what you will pay. I would get this new.
Cam chain: aftermarket only.
Sorry to hear about the bad news.
Have to agree will usbear. You need to pull it apart to clean it out, and find out the full extent of damage.
I would do a compression test before tearing it down to check if the rings are still good.

thanks for the red flag and 10-4 on the compression test prior to tear down Ghost! I suppose that's alright while the filter assembly and oil pan is down?
Re: CB650C Project from P. I. Needs help of a brethren..
Are you still working on this machine? You can usually get the rack screws out by spraying with gumout then kroil, or PB Blaster, then using a small pair of USA Made Vice Grips on the head. Once you get them out, do not put them back. Use stainless steel socket head cap screws. All your rubber gaskets obviously need to be replaced. I can send you some carb parts if you send me a list.
Re: CB650C Project from P. I. Needs help of a brethren..
@jagans: yes i am still working on her and will continue to do so as long as she is able to keep up. I am done with the carb job and now I need to rectify the aluminum dust and disintegrated cam chain tensioner and/or guide.
Re: CB650C Project from P. I. Needs help of a brethren..
That would be the primary chain tensioner, and starter clutch
23150-426-010 TENSIONER
I can not say for sure if that chain is damaged, or if it is just the camera flash that I am seeing. The tensioner should have a small spring attached to it to hold the tensioning arm against the chain.
As far as doing the compression test without the filter, and pan on. It is not a good idea to crank the engine over without oil in it. You risk damaging the crank/rod bearings because the oil is not there to cushion them.

Re: CB650C Project from P. I. Needs help of a brethren..
I guess compression testing is not viable for now. I will just inspect everything during tear down and cross my fingers everything is still good except for the obvious chain guide and tensioner. Bob is an amazing guy and hes sourcing me parts I will need. I will start the tear down as soon as Typhoon Utor leave our tiny country.
Keep you guys posted.
