Re: Oil leak, top end

beware the gasket set...many have mentioned poor quality gaskets in this set. i paid them no heed, and less than a year after a rebuild the leaks are back in force. maybe someone else will have better luck.

Re: Running on 2 cylinders?

do all the pipes feel equally hot? will be the first question people will ask. which carbs does your bike have (79-80, then 81 and on...)? do you have good spark at the plugs (not just the wire ends)? if you do, rule out ignition for the time being, though this is a likely suspect because your cylin...

Re: A lil' engine smoke

Guess the whole new to motorcycles thing has me second guessing myself. given the time i have logged on fixing things, i no longer consider myself new to motorcycles, but the second guessing has not gone away. :D also, i'm not sure the smoke you saw is related to the oil on the engine. i have had l...

Re: Athena gasket kit for 1982 CB650SC.. will i get everythi

i agree with volker...there are usually more pressing things in the name of preventative measures, namely electrical and fuel delivery. if you're only getting a small amount of seepage, wait for an extended period of non riding weather (here we call it "winter") and pull the motor and go t...

you might have better luck or be more competent than i was.

a friend suggested that i buy blank gasket material and trace my own out with an x acto. this might be something to consider for yours. i know i do not relish the thought of going back in!!!

Re: Athena gasket kit for 1982 CB650SC.. will i get everythi

might be late for you, but i had heard dodgy things about this kit, specifically the head and base gaskets, and after my rebuild i do indeed have some seepage after let's say 5 thousand miles.

i may try and retorque to get a better seal, but i do suspect the quality of those gaskets. i was warned!

Re: How badly could I screw it up?

you can do it, and when you finish you won't be a novice anymore. plan on taking five times as long as you thought, though. if you take it to a shop it will cost you a lot, and set a precedent for your bike repairs that will be financially untenable. if you follow some of the engine rebuild threads ...

Re: A lil' engine smoke

it sounds likely that your speedo cable is dirty. unhook it at the guage and put some lubricant in there. do it a few times so that gravity can do its thing.

Re: My new 1982 Honda CB650

that thing is clean!!!! the steering head bearings are no sweat, and you'll get to know lots of different parts of the bike by getting to them, which you will have to learn someday...taking care of these bikes is part of the joy, and you'd go broke if you took it to someone to fix all the time. enjo...

Re: fuel tank issue

i have had really great success resurrecting tanks with all kinds of rust perforations using this product http://www.caswellplating.com/restoration-aids/epoxy-gas-tank-sealer.html it's a two part gas proof epoxy. it's a pretty easy procedure (although you have to be careful to get a good coat on the...

Re: '81 cb650c idle jets, how do i clean them?

mine is an 80 and they are pressed in, so that kit pictured must be the 81/2.

pinhead: isn't that big one with the emulsion tubes the main jet? maybe i understand it wrong?

if you look at the picture of the jets in the kit, they don't have tubes.

thanks google!!!

Re: '81 cb650c idle jets, how do i clean them?

that's a good question...i was always under the impression that they didn't. i've taken only one other set of carbs apart, a virago's that had removal pilot jets, which did not have emulfisier tubes. the mains did, however. i think that the pilot jets are small enough that they shoot a fine mist, wh...

Re: '81 cb650c idle jets, how do i clean them?

i wouldn't take them out. there is debate about the guitar string method, and some claim it can harm the pressed in jets by inadvertently making them larger. having said this, i have cleaned them with a .010" string. you can buy a single string at the guitar store, so to be safe, get a .008 or ...
