Re: 2 dead cylinders?

Lets go back to real basics here. to run we need spark, compression, and fuel. You indicate you have spark and by switching around wires it would appear that you have compression. So before we spend a lot of time tearing stuff apart we can find out a few things with some simple tests. Go to the auto...

Re: Re-ring?

Just for the heck of it, get som small clear tubing (I use some stuff from the pet store for fish tanks-but anything will do) and put it on the drain nipple on the bottom of the carb. With gas OFF open the drain screw about a full turn and let the cab drain. catch the gas in a clear container. Reple...

Re: Surging and stumble above 6000rpm

Yes. Most recent compression test:

#1 110/180
#2 120/185
#3 80/170
#4 122/190

Exhaust "wet" on #3 pipe (stock 4 into 4)

When plug pulled #3 plug black and wet, other plugs nice light tan color
(44c carbs with 105 mains, 38 low speed, stock air box and pipes)

Re: Surging and stumble above 6000rpm

I have a bad cylinder on my bike. Soon as I can afford it, I'm going to do the rings. In the mean time I have a problem that sounds like yours. In my case it seems to be a plug problem. My #3 cylinder will foul the plug after about 150 miles. The odd thing is that the bike will start fine and if I o...

Re: Re-ring?

With a compression reading of 170 you are golden! And shift at 8500 from now on-those valve springs may not be up to a lot of 9000 rpm sprints. There is really nothing I would do to juice up the bike. The easy way to more HP is a big bore kit, but none are available for the 650. No one is offering a...

Re: jet sizes for cb650 custom

Just wondering, Why did he tell you to go up 2 sizes on the lets? I believe the jets in my 650 are 38s so I'm guessing that would mean he wants 42s. I got a set of carbs off the internet with 42s in them and my bike ran like poop. My bike now has 38/105 jets and is running great. I'm only a little a...

Re: jet sizes for cb650 custom

Is this a trick question? You can't get the slow jets out of the 44a carbs (at least without destroying them) I don't know of anywhere to get replacement press in jets. My best answer was to get a set of 44c ('82) carbs and now all is good with the world.

Re: Re-ring?

I would recommend taking some compression reading and do so every couple thousand miles. This is a much better way of knowing when the bike needs rings. When you do the ring job, I would use the old pistons with new rings. Any time I pull pistons, and the cylinders are NOT going to be bored, I numbe...

Re: Hopefully a new 82 CB650 owner

I think all of us will agree, this is not a good value. With the known problems and the possible unknown problems the bike would have to be under $1000 before it would be worth taking on the risks, and frankly then only if you are going to do the work. I see a lot of bikes that are much better value...

Re: Hopefully a new 82 CB650 owner

Real hard for me to advise you on if you can do this. To me, this is all a simple, but time comusming job. Frankly, I can't wait to get the jugs off my bike. for me its a money issue as I'm retired and living on SS. Maybe you should go here http://cosky0.tripod.com/id6.html and read up on it. There ...
