Re: won't start now ..electrical issue?

Well ...this whole issue was anything but "normal", so I guess I should have been looking for the "unusual" all along! The bike seemed to be running fine when I stored it last fall ..perhaps the -40C temps had something to do with the gasket shrinkage, and resulting compression l...

Re: won't start now ..electrical issue?

Okay ...did the quick and dirty "finger test" for compression, and the compression WAS down on 1,2,3 as compared to #4. So (...and why didn't I think of this before??????????????) ...I checked the cylinder head bolts (at least the ones I could access) and a couple of the bolts in the #1 an...

Re: won't start now ..electrical issue?

Okay. Now I've gone from impatient to frustrated. I took Rocky's advice (which is GOOD advice) and replaced the spark plugs with NGK DR8ESL's (gapped at 28), replaced the resistor caps with new NGK resistor caps, replaced the plug wires with new 7mm copper-core wire ($1.75 per foot). I then re-check...

Re: won't start now ..electrical issue?

Okay, gotcha. This is just getting weirder and weirder: I tinkered with the plug wires again yesterday ...and re-checked the pulse generator. And then the bike started and ran quite well ..BUT ONLY ON CYLINDER #4 !!! The other cylinders weren't firing at all! I could tell because the exhaust pipes r...

Re: won't start now ..electrical issue?

Okay, Houston ...looks like we have a problem. My bike is running the resistor spark plugs AND the resistor caps. Does that mean there's TOO much resistance going on, and I'm getting a weak spark?? So, hypothetically, I could keep these plugs and go with non-copper spark plug wires and regular conne...

Re: won't start now ..electrical issue?

I'll check the plug type later today. Are you saying I should be checking two plugs at a time for spark? ie: take out #1 and #4 and check them, and then do #2 and #3? Looks like I have OEM stock plug wires and caps etc. What size are the OEM wires (copper core) on these bikes? 7mm or 8mm? I assume i...

Re: won't start now ..electrical issue?

Wow ...looks like Spring may be on the way! It got to +3C today! Had a chance to check the spark situation: using a known-good Honda Civic spark plug, I pulled each plug wire, plugged-in the spark plug, and cranked over the engine (with the fuel turned off). I got a good strong spark on wires #1, #3...

Re: won't start now ..electrical issue?

Bike has been stored indoors, but not in a heated space. We're supposed to have another +2 C day again tomorrow, so I'll test the plugs against the block to ensure I have spark. I'll also check the Pulse Generator to see if there's an issue there. If I was to replace the coils with Dynatek coils, do...

Re: NEW cb650 owner with electrical question.

Congrats on you good luck so far with getting the bike up and running! I'm having issues with my 650C ...

Check out the online Service Manual here: http://cosky0.tripod.com/index.html you'll find a color-coded wiring diagram that should help.

Good luck!

Re: won't start now ..electrical issue?

Okay ....another "warm" day today (+2 C) so I had a chance to do some tinkering. I removed all the spark plug wires (one at a time) and checked and cleaned the ends, connections etc. I did a continuity check on each wire with an ohm meter. Wire #4 did have a poor connection, so I fixed tha...

Re: won't start now ..electrical issue?

Yes ...I guess I'm going to have to take the tank off and do some more snooping. Is there a way to do "resistance" or whatever testing on the ignition components to see if they are not fried, broken, or otherwise malfunctioning?

Re: won't start now ..electrical issue?

Okay ...that sounds plausible. However, I haven't re-arranged the wires lately. Which order should the plug wires be in? Presently they are arranged as such: from the coil on the left-hand side (as viewed sitting on the bike), the top wire goes to the spark plug on the far right (#4 ?)(no number on ...

Re: won't start now ..electrical issue?

Well, the temperature got up to +5C (41F) today, and after a bit of putzing around, I got the bike started ...but only "kinda started". Turns out it was only running on #1 cylinder!! I noticed a puddle of fuel on the floor ...it had been draining out of the exhaust pipe on cylinder #4, and...

Re: won't start now ..electrical issue?

....okay ...a lot of info there. So, how do I drain the entire fuel system and then (with new fuel in the tank) "prime" the system to get new fuel to where its supposed to be?

Re: won't start now ..electrical issue?

Well ..still no luck with the starting problem. Installed the replacement solenoid, and the fully charged battery, and did the full choke and throttle-twist 5 times routine: nothing. I mean, no start. Not even a sputtering start. I tried this 5 times ..even put some gas line anti-freeze in the gas (...
