Re: Barn find, sorta

Kool for you, a VS 800 always looked enticing to me, nice torquey engine. I started riding in '77 on a Suzuki 500 Twin 2 stroke, what a blast! Back then you had to figure mechanical issues out all by your lonesome, or from a car mechanic, unless you think the Haynes or Clymer manuals are good enough...

Re: Barn find, sorta

Dumbscout, I like your sheer bravery, #1 seeing an old screwed up motorcycle for what it coiuld be...a lot of work, time and $ Mine is not that bad but was abused and left in the Oregon rain, so I am getting good at removing rusted on nuts and bolts. :) As far as mechanical advice, I am a hopeless r...

Re: Head Gasket replacement, cleaning mating surfaces

So it seems I should go out and buy a THIRD! battery?
Are the expensive gel batteries worth the money?
I need to clean contacts first it seems, the starter ground? the battery ground? probably all correct?
Thanks

Re: Head Gasket replacement, cleaning mating surfaces

The battery in use at the moment, is only 3 weeks old. I still have the battery that came with the bike, its old but still takes a charge. The newer battery starts the bike cold, wont start it when warm, and left overnight, will easily start it again when cold! I wouldnt think this a bad battery iss...

Head gasket installation

I need to replace the head gasket/o rings in 1981 Custom. I am using the Clymer repair manual, complete with CRAPPY pictures. Can I print out a few pages of the free cosky manual? Are there any tips/hints any body has before I begin this task? Should I use sealant on the gasket or install it dry? I ...

Re: Head Gasket replacement, cleaning mating surfaces

Bonhomechristopher, Nothing says love more than spending umpteen million hours cleaning surfaces that may or may not need it, Hah, regardless, it will run better when done just for the attention you gave it. Sorry to hear about slow gasket delivery, I ordered one from local dealer last week, he even...

Re: An idea for the head oil leak

Great idea, creating support for the O ring.
Too bad these need to be custom made.

Re: Head gasket purcahse

Ok I may give them a try.
I dont suppose the o rings are a common size, so you can get them anywhere?

Re: Head Gasket replacement, cleaning mating surfaces

Thanks for info regarding gasket clean up, too bad nobody manufactures/sells steel wool that disolves in heated motor oil. :P The board with all of the bolts arranged in order as they came out is a good idea, thanks. I guess I will have to clean all the carbon off of the pistons while I am in there....

Is the head gasket for the 81 C still available?
What source seems to be the most reliable?
Thanks

Head Gasket replacement, cleaning mating surfaces

Among other ailments, my new to me, 1981 CB650 C has what appears to be a leaking head gasket, the last bike I replaced a head gasket on was a 1976 Triumph Bonneville, relatively simple engine and that was decades ago. :P Are there any tips I should be aware of in order to avoid mistakes not readily...

Re: 1981 CB 650 C with 35 k goes into gear only on centerst

Volker P, Thanks for sending the link to the free repair manual, very helpful. The bike came with a Clymer manual so I think I am good to go. The curious thing about the clutch is that it did go into gear when up on the stand, quite easily in fact, but not when sitting on two wheels. Anyway, it was ...

Re: 1981 CB 650 C with 35 k goes into gear only on centerst

OK, soak them I will, I picked up a new oil filter and some Golden Spectro 10-40 yesterday, the sludge in the engine barely resembles oil, probabaly gonna have to flush it a coupla times in the first few weeks of its resurection. Replacing the clutch plates, springs and gasket is a given at this poi...

Re: 1981 CB 650 C with 35 k goes into gear only on centerst

Thanks, yeah I would have thought that the clutch, even if worn, would still give me a little friction when on the ground. Im sure its original, previous owner didnt give this poor bike any love. So now its all up to me. Not sure what to think about heavy duty clutch, I dont want "heavy pull&qu...

1981 CB 650 C with 35 k goes into gear only on centerstand

I purchased it today, runs like it has old gas issues, drained and refilled carbs, runs rough but getting better. Wierd thing is, when on the centerstand it will go into gear and deliver power to the rear wheel as you would expect. When down on two wheels, tapping the shift lever into gear 1st or 2n...
