Good bye to group
After several enjoyable years with the group I am selling my pristine 81. I just purchased a Goldwing GL1200 and my wife says 2 bikes are 1 too many.
I have enjoyed the advice and fellowship and hope I might've been some assistance from time to time.

You won't be able to explain it to non-riders. I don't even try

Re: Fat fingers
I use a short piece of hose fitted over the plug to hand start the plug before switching to the wrench to tighten.

Re: Chain Questions
Not sure of your model but I think O ring chains were pretty much standard OEM. I use one on mine w/o issues. Some folks prefer a non-O ring and keep it lubed. I prefer the O ring myself. If the teeth on your sprocket look fine, then I don't see any need to replace it. I did, however, go from a 16 t...

Re: Chain vs. Shaft drive
Chain drive: more efficient power delivery, more maintenance Shaft drive: generally less efficient but less maintenance. I had a Moto Guzzi and a Honda CX500 both with shaft drive. Shaft drive was smoother and had less maintenance hassles. I noticed that both had a weird sort of torque wind up but t...

Re: Motorcycle Hauler
Thought about one myself. Seems easier than wrestling the bike up on one of those sideways carriers and less weight on hitch. It would be nice to hear from someone who has one.

Re: Exhaust Questions
As for the "Loud Pipes Save Lives" crowd (mostly on big twins, you know who), I call Bulls**t. It's more about "Hey, look at me, ain't I cool?"
Glad you want to quiet it down. Your ears, and those of your neighbors will thank you

Re: Choosing the right bike
Maybe a CB750? It seems that parts and performance kits are more readily available. Check the SOHC 4 boards.

Re: Sprocket upgrade
In fact the poor thing of the CB650 is the chassis. One may get some improvement with progressive fork springs and thicker fork oil. And modern tyres make a big difference, especially for the rear. Nevertheless there is no chance to keep up with non-beginners on actual sportsbikes. CB650 chassis is...

Re: Choosing the right bike
It's only my opinion, but the general frame and suspension of these bikes are far surpassed by modern sportbikes that it is much more cost efficient to simply find a used sportbike. Engine mods and other stuff won't be able to bring a 35 yr old design up to the same standards.

Re: Carbs...why bother?
Just to be sure: the link was not to say this is what you should do now but just intended to show how a simple and not bad idea can nevertheless turn into lengthy stories (for some users here). I still have the stock ignition and other stuff and it just runs fine. These bikes are engineered so that...

Re: Tank Swap Ideas
I wouldn't do the welding thing. Just use a petcock that fits. If the fuel line is a different size then you might put an inline filter in. I had one that will take either a 1/4" or 5/16". I have a couple old petcocks laying around that are in better shape than the one in photo. Sometimes ...

Re: New guy just starting out
I would get a battery and see if it will turn over. If so, I would assume that the engine isn't seized (possible but not really likely). If turning over I would avoid squirting things into the cylinders if possible. Open a float bowl drain screw and see what comes out. I had no luck with cleaning ou...
