Re: starter
Starter related and this thread established, here's a twist: couple of days ago, when I pulled in to park, I noticed that the neutral light did not come on when I shifted of gear, I clicked it up and down to no avail, so went on into the grocery store and upon return, had complete silence/deadness w...

Re: bike won't recharge battery
Volker, that's an interesting comment about the rotor short occurring when hot. I have had a sneaking suspicion that heat might have something to do with it - having read a bit about that somewhere else in someone's comments. If that's happening, it stops charging when it gets hot enough to cause th...

Re: bike won't recharge battery
Got the Hydrometer and with the battery fully charged, all cells measured full w/o inherent cell problems. BTW, finding a way to get the battery acid/water mixture out to test wasn't a snap. It takes a quite small tip to fit into the fill hole - and then to get deep enough to extract the water. What...

Re: bike won't recharge battery
OK and yes -that's why I noted the plug wires/plugs as just part of the general restoration. As far as plugs - or electrical connections, wiring blocks, etc., I cleaned/greased all that I could find. I did find that one battery cell was slightly low, refilled it and am overnight charging. Picked up ...

Re: my "new" seat
This look great - and more contemporary. Sargent makes nice products. I used a stock cover they make for an '87 VF700C - fit like a glove and true to original design except the 'carbon fiber fabric pattern.' Did you ship them your seat and have them do the whole thing custom - or is this a stock cov...

Re: bike won't recharge battery
Thanks, I'll check the battery acid level today and report back. Where would the temp volt meter be installed - and where does one get such a device?

Re: bike won't recharge battery
Bike accelerates and runs smooth as glass. And when parked/left for several days, looses no charge level - I wouldn't think that would be indicative of a bad plug or short. The spark plugs have less then 300 miles on em.
But thanks!
But thanks!

Re: bike won't recharge battery
I have this problem as well. So far, my tech replaced the rotor w/a rebuilt and replaced the brushes w/new parts. I have been through all wiring, cleaned and lubed all connections, made sure all connections and components are mounted tight, etc. replaced the battery, spark plug wires, and the main f...

Re: NEED HELP 81 CB 650 wont go past 3k rpms
Matty, I had a very similar experience w/the bogging down - refusing to rev smooth above 3-4K. My mechanic suggested taking a look at the air filter to see if it was aftermarket. sure enough it was so I ordered a spec. filter and that improved it significantly. Also, you can read Dave's Ultimate Gui...

Re: Restoration Progress
Thanks for the kind words, guys :P And, I didn't know that the mirrors and engine guard are not OE. One of the guards still has a label on it "Hondaline." I do need to get the rust off the pipe joint - you can't see it in these pics but the header pipes are discolored and have some pitting...

Except for the MC 'Cafe' fairing, CycleGear grips, and customized seat, it's all original. All engine side covers, visible valve and carb covers have been treated with aircraft Stripper and hand polished. I wanted to lower the overall seat hgt, so in addition to lowering the front shocks, I modified...

Choke cable adjustment
I find that if I physically pull up hard on the choke, the engine starts first time. Otherwise, with it just pulled up and left, it takes multiple tries to start. Using Clymer's, I can't find where the length of the choke cable or positioning of the pull handle is adjustable. If the cable is stretch...

Re: Oil leakage
the shift lever oil (12.5x25x8) seal was easily replaced from the outside and has been "dry" since. I was able to get the direct replacement part from BikeBandit.com for $5.40

Re: Oil leakage
Thanks again, Volker - I noticed the contact/lobe system when I was cleaning originally. I moved the contact slightly closer to the lobe and that gave me the neutral light back. Rode about 10 miles at varying speeds yesterday evening and thus far, no further oil leak from the reinserted seal.

Re: Oil leakage
Thanks Volker - I have repositioned the oil seal, topped up the oil and ordered a new seal. The interior of the chain cover area being extremely clogged, I degreased it thoroughly so I could see what all was happening in there. Unfortunately, next time I tried starting up, I discovered that the work...
